Why I Love Photographing Families in North London

North London is my home. I’ve lived here most of my life, and I probably wouldn’t want to move to any other part of the city. There’s a vibe here that’s hard to explain but easy to feel. Chilled, unassuming, quietly pretty. A little bit magical in places. Quaint and villagey in others. Diverse, historic, and with some of the best restaurants in London if you know where to look.

It’s a language that north Londoners just speak.

The families who come to me understand that feeling. They want their photographs to reflect the life they’ve built here. In their home, in a park they walk through every weekend, in a corner of the city that belongs to them.

That’s not something you can manufacture. You either feel it, or you don’t.

The places

Hampstead Heath feels magical and a little romantic. It’s the kind of place where the light does something different and you find yourself slowing down without meaning to.

Highgate is pretty and nostalgic. There’s a sense of history in it that sits quietly underneath everything.

Winchmore Hill has that villagey quality, the kind of place that feels like it exists slightly outside of time.

Alexandra Palace is historic and iconic, offering panoramic views of the city.

And Enfield. Enfield is unpretentious. Unassuming. It doesn’t try to be anything other than what it is, and honestly that suits my work perfectly.

Why local knowledge matters

I came to North London aged 10. Since then I've lived it. These aren't streets I discovered through work. They're streets I've walked, lived in, and come to know over many years.

That familiarity shows up in how I am with people. Relaxed, unhurried, at home. And when I'm at ease, my clients feel it. That's when the real photographs happen.

The work

When I look back at my work, I can feel the essence of North London in it. The locations, yes. But also something harder to name. The honesty of it. The calm. The softness.

I’m not sure I can fully explain it. But I think that’s exactly the point.

If you’re a North London family looking for photographs that feel like home, I’d love to hear from you.
