What to Think About Before Booking a Newborn Photography Session

Most parents come to me knowing roughly what they want. A few beautiful images of their baby. Something real. Something they'll keep.

What they don't always know is how those first hours with a photographer actually feel, and how that changes what they wish they'd booked.

Newborn sessions take time. More than you'd think.

A newborn session isn't like any other kind of photography. Your baby sets the pace, not the clock. There are feeds, nappy changes, moments where everything stops because your baby needs to settle. There are cuddles that turn into something beautiful, and then your baby stirs and we wait again.

This isn't a problem. This is the session.

The families who come away with their favourite images are almost always the ones who gave themselves enough time to stop watching the clock. When the pressure is off, something shifts. You relax. Your baby relaxes. And that's when the real photographs happen.

samantha-black-newborn-photography-session-london,

You will want more images than you think.

I've been doing this long enough to say this with confidence: almost every family, once they've seen their gallery, wishes they had more.

Not because the images aren't beautiful. Because they are, and choosing between them is hard. A hand. A look. The way your partner held your baby in that particular moment. These things are harder to leave behind than you'd imagine when you're sitting at home before the session trying to work out what you actually need.

It's worth thinking about this before you book rather than after. Not to spend more than you're comfortable with, but to be honest with yourself about what this moment is worth to you, and how you'll feel looking back.

The questions worth sitting with

Do I want to feel unhurried on the day, or am I happy with something more focused and condensed?

When I imagine looking back at these photographs in ten years, do I want a handful of the very best, or do I want to feel like the whole story was captured?

Am I someone who'll want something to hold, prints on a wall, an album, or are digital files enough for me?

There's no wrong answer. But knowing your answer before you book means you'll arrive feeling settled rather than second-guessing yourself.
