5 reasons Why Maternity Photos Are Important

As a London maternity photographer who has spent over a decade documenting families, newborns, and motherhood, I’m often asked the same questions:

“What is maternity photography?”

“Do I really need a maternity shoot?”

“Will I feel like myself?”

The truth is simple:

Maternity photos become more meaningful with time.

Not because of how you look — but because of what this chapter represents.

Below are five reasons mothers tell me they’re grateful they documented this season.

1. You will never have this exact moment again

Pregnancy is brief, even when it feels long.

The way you’re carrying.

The way you’re changing.

The way you’re becoming someone new.

If you’re unsure whether it’s “worth it,” ask yourself:

Will I want to remember this in five, ten, or twenty years?

Most mums say yes.

Your child almost certainly will too.

These images don’t just honour your pregnancy — they become part of your family’s story.

2. It’s a chance to celebrate your body and its strength

Pregnancy isn’t always soft and glowing.

It can be raw, uncomfortable, emotional — and still unbelievably beautiful.

A maternity session gives you space to honour that.

Not because your body “looks a certain way,”

But because it’s doing something extraordinary.

Years from now, you won’t see the doubts or the discomfort.

You’ll see strength.

You’ll see love.

You’ll see the beginning of everything.

3. A moment to bond With Your Partner, or With Yourself

Whether you’re doing this session solo or with someone you love, maternity photography creates a pause.

A chance to breathe.

A chance to connect.

A chance to feel the weight and wonder of what’s unfolding.

Every session is different.

Some are quiet and reflective.

Some are full of laughter.

All are shaped around who you are and how you feel that day.

4. a space for Self-expression and creativity

Your session can be whatever you want it to be:

• soft and intimate

• clean and editorial

• artistic and cinematic

• warm, natural, and at home

There is no single way to “do” maternity photography.

What matters is that the images feel like you.

My role is to help translate your vision — gently, intuitively, without over-styling — into something that feels like art.

5. You won't regret it - these images only grow in value

Almost every mum who books a maternity session tells me the same thing:

“I’m so glad I did this.”

These photographs become part of your visual legacy — a record of where your story began and the version of you your baby will never fully remember.

And if you’re already thinking ahead to the newborn chapter, you can explore my London newborn photography sessions to see how I document those early days.
