Unlocking the Wisdom of Kids: 3 Lessons I've Learned
I want to share the three most valuable lessons I've gained from working closely with children for over a decade. These takeaways are a testament to the incredible wisdom that kids can offer.
1. Take the time to be curious and get on their level
No need for fancy qualifications here. I'm not a certified teacher or childcare expert, nor have I delved into the intricacies of child development or psychology. I'm simply a mother who's had the privilege of working with children for quite some time now, and I've paid close attention. I've discovered that the best place to connect with them is right where they are. It's all about being comfortable at their level from toddlers to teens.
2. Go ahead and feel those big emotions
As adults, we often slap labels on various behaviours, deeming them "unacceptable." But let's be real – there are moments when we must grant ourselves permission to feel those intense emotions without self-judgment. Suppressing our feelings only leads to suffering, and that suffering can create even more challenges down the road. We all have our limits, so why not be honest with ourselves? Sometimes, we need to embrace those emotions in a big, unfiltered way.
3. Embrace fear more often
Children's fearlessness is truly inspiring, even when it occasionally results in tears. While a measure of caution is undoubtedly crucial in life, I've learned to challenge my upbringing, rooted in overly cautious parenting. The more we confront our significant fears, the smaller they tend to become. Sometimes, we all need a gentle reminder of this, and children are often the masters of fearlessness.
In a nutshell, children have been some of my greatest teachers.
I don't say this to diminish myself but to emphasise the profound lessons I've learned from my kids and the hundreds of children I've had the privilege to work with.
I'm genuinely delighted to learn from them and occasionally humbled by their insights. In children's eyes, we adults are the "knowers of things" and the "teachers of things." However, approaching them with curiosity and trust opens the door to raw, unfiltered feedback and communication.
These are the moments when I am in sheer awe of the wisdom these young minds can impart.
