Beach and Outdoor Maternity Photography in Kent: Natural Light Sessions on the Coast

If you are looking for a beach maternity photoshoot near London, the Kent coast offers some of the most beautiful natural backdrops available within easy reach of the city. I shoot maternity, motherhood and couples sessions on the Kent coast between May and September, with a small number of dedicated shoot days available each season. If you are interested, enquire early as dates are limited.

Why I started shooting on the beach

I have always worked in natural light. In homes, in gardens, in the quiet corners of people's lives. But something shifted when I took a session to the coast for the first time. The scale of it. The way the light moves differently when there is nothing between you and the horizon. The way the wind does something to a photograph that no studio ever could.

It felt like a natural extension of everything I already do, just with more sky.

What kind of sessions work best for a beach shoot?

Beach and coastal sessions work beautifully for maternity photography, motherhood portraits, and couples. The space allows for something more expansive and cinematic than an in-home session, while still being completely natural and unposed.

I am not currently offering beach sessions for larger family groups, but if you are expecting, postpartum, or want photographs that capture you and your partner before everything changes, the coast is a extraordinary place to do it.

Where do I shoot on the Kent coast?

My primary coastal location is Broadstairs in Kent, a town with genuine character, beautiful sandy bays, and the kind of light that makes every frame feel considered. It is accessible from London by train and sits within a stretch of coastline that offers variety depending on the mood we are going for.

I am also open to other Kent coastal locations for the right session and the right client. If you have somewhere in mind, get in touch and we can talk through whether it works.

What does a beach maternity session actually look like?

We follow the light and we follow you. There is no posing in the traditional sense. We walk, we pause, we let the environment do what it does. I shoot the moments between the posed ones because that is always where the real photographs are.

Sessions typically last between one and two hours depending on the light and how you are feeling on the day. We always work around you and your baby.

What about the weather?

This is the question I get asked most and my honest answer is that I have come to love the variety.

A warm June evening with golden light and a still sea is one kind of beautiful. A chillier May morning with wind off the water, knitwear, and a wrap around your bump is a completely different kind of beautiful and just as worth having. Some of my favourite images have come from days that were not perfect by conventional standards.

What we avoid is rain and extreme cold. Everything else is workable and often wonderful.

What should you wear for a beach maternity shoot?

Flowing fabrics that move in the wind. Soft textures. Muted, warm tones that sit against the natural palette of sand, sea and sky rather than competing with it. For cooler sessions, knitwear and layering can look absolutely stunning and adds a different mood entirely.

I help every client with styling before their session. If you are unsure what to wear, send me a photo and we will work it out together.

How far in advance should you book?

I schedule dedicated shoot days on the Kent coast rather than travelling for individual sessions, which means availability is genuinely limited. If you are due between late spring and early autumn and are interested in a coastal session, I would recommend getting in touch as soon as possible.

Sessions are available May through September.

FAQ

Where do you shoot beach maternity sessions near London? My main coastal location is Broadstairs in Kent, which is around an hour and a half from central London by train. I also consider other Kent coastal locations depending on the session.

How far in advance should I book a beach maternity session? As early as possible. I travel to the Kent coast on dedicated shoot days and take a limited number of sessions per trip. Enquire as soon as you know you are interested, even if your due date is months away.

What is the best time of year for a beach maternity shoot? I shoot coastal sessions between May and September. June to August offers the warmest conditions and longest light. May and September can be cooler but often produce the most atmospheric and cinematic results, particularly for clients who want a more textured, editorial feel.

What should I wear for a beach maternity photoshoot? Flowing fabrics, soft textures, and warm tones that complement the natural environment. For cooler sessions, knitwear and wraps work beautifully. I help with styling for every session so you are never on your own with this decision.

Do you shoot beach sessions for families with children? Not currently. My coastal sessions are focused on maternity, motherhood and couples. If you are interested in an outdoor family session, get in touch and we can discuss what might work.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day? We stay in touch in the days leading up to your session and make a call together if conditions are genuinely unsuitable. A little wind and cloud is usually fine and often beautiful. We only reschedule for rain or conditions that would affect your comfort or safety.
