Let's talk about resistance in Dads
as a London Newborn Photographer, sometimes I get resistance from Dads. Not always but sometimes. Some Dads are super happy and excited to be photographed whilst other not so much.
Maybe it's that they just don’t want to be photographed or maybe it's that he's not comfortable in front of the camera. There are also Dads that are just not that into it - this is a real thing. There's a whole range of reasons why and to be honest....
I get why they feel this way at times
I’m all about taking it easy in our sessions. Coffee/ Tea and a chat helps but to tell the truth, they generally change their minds, and are happy they did. Because the shots just don't lie.
I guess it doesn’t matter why they change their minds... fact is they often do.
And I’m so damn happy for them. So very happy. Why?
- Because these are the times you just can’t get back.
- Because I'm a Mum of 2 and I never want somone to regret not having been photographed with their newborn
- Because my soul wouldn't feel happy if I didn't try in my own way to really find that place where both Mum and Dad are cool with it all. Whatever that is.
Real talk
How to overcome it
There is no quick fix but the truth is when I get that feeling that Dad my have some resistance, I'll address what might be to some, the elephant in the room before we shoot. We chat over the phone so before I come for the session I'll know what to expect. And if I do pick up anything else from Mum or Dad when I arrive, I'll just find a way around it.
At the end of the day If I know what Mum and Dad want to get out of it, that really helps. So I'll just throw more stuff at them to see what they like and don't like. The idea is to give them more and more of what I think they'll love... and what I love too.
If I get any resistance then I'll pull back a bit, but my goal is to never make anyone feel uncomfortable at all.
If you have any insight into this type of resistance I get I would love to hear it.
