8 ways to improve your photographs - for photographers
I rarely write anything just for photographers so here goes. Here are 8 ways to improve your photographs - for photographers. I hope it helps :)
1. Get to know who you're shooting, and let them get to know you.
Sounds pretty straightforward, right? But it's easily missed. Be honest with yourself, and then the rest is easy. In other words, if you're just in this for the payday, it will show.
2. There's no reason why you can't get what they want, and what you want. Just figure out how.
First and foremost, if you want to improve your photographs, you must listen to your clients. What you want AND what they wish matter; after all, they have chosen you, so there must be room for creativity. If you can't get anything you want to do, ask yourself, is this a dealbreaker?
3. Know your gear and your light, your camera and lenses need to be an extension of your arm
I'm shocked that so many professional photographers don't know their gear or cannot read light with confidence. I'll be honest I'm not super technical, but I work within my means and push boundaries too. This comes from a place of practice and learning.
You'll be able to give your all to a family when you feel super at ease about your gear.
Practice, practice, fail, then practice some more. You see, it's not about being perfect; it's about learning from your mistakes. Mistakes are necessary in what we do... ππΎ
4. Have a vision - but be willing to change it
A plan is good, just be prepared for the unexpected.
5. Work in your zone of genius
This doesn't mean you shouldn't work outside your zone of genius; of course, you should constantly challenge yourself. However, when it comes to clients' marketing themselves to families, they come to you because they like something. Remember that, keep a certain level of consistency and be mindful of what drew them in.
6. Don't overthink it
Yes, just don't. Keep it simple and you'll find a groove.
7. Accept that you may have to take several shots to get that one shot you love. That's life.
8. Check your shots from time to time. Reshoot if you have to.
It took me a while to get confident around asking people to do things again, but I had to bite the bullet because I wanted to improve my images. The fact you picked up on something a bit off shows courage and humility. If you're going to get it right, get it right. Ultimately they will know you're aiming to nail it.
I hope these eight ways to improve your photographs help enhance your pictures and how you work.
