15 Newborn Baby Essentials 2023

I've compiled a personal list of what I've found essential when raising my children. Navigating the world of baby products can feel daunting, but having raised two kids, I can assure you that many of the latest baby gadgets aren't necessities.

Also, over the last 12 years as a Newborn and family photographer, I’ve been in hundreds of homes photographing newborns and babies. I see things people use, like and don’t like and that’s helped me write this list too.

In reality, keeping things simple and minimal initially can save you from unnecessary purchases, return trips to the store, and ending up with unused baby items cluttering your space. It's all about adding what you need precisely when you need it.

It's also important to note that since becoming a parent, I've grown more mindful of choosing sustainable products. This not only reduces waste but also minimizes our environmental footprint. If sustainability interests you, I recommend thoroughly researching your options. You might be pleasantly surprised by the cost-effectiveness of sustainable choices. Plus, consider repurposing items or saving them for future use if you plan to expand your family.

15 Newborn Baby Essentials 2023

Let's get to it....

My very own Top 15 Newborn Baby Essentials in 2023

  1. . Moses basket or a bedside crib - I used this one from John Lewis with this stand, and many of my clients do too! There is also this one from The Little Green Sheep. I’ve always loved that brand but it’s a bit more to spend. The other thing I tend to see a lot of my clients with is the Snuz pod. I haven’t personally used it but a lot of people seem to love it.

  2. 100% cotton Muslins - lots of them. I used The Aden + Anais brand but I also like the Mushie brand, the colours are gorgeous and they are 100% organic cotton. Chances are I’d probably get the latter if I had my time again!

  3. A good pram that is not too heavy, easy to manoeuvre and, is a good balance of protection, comfort and quality

  4. Car seat

  5. Blanket

  6. Baby bath - I had one with a stand but this Shnuggle looks cool too.  They do grow out of these things pretty fast though so think carefully about this. We went straight into the big bath after this with a baby safety bath seat inside the bath

  7. Changing bag and travel changing mat - so many to chhoose from now but make sure you get this right.  You can even get the backpack ones now

  8. Wipes/washable wipes - alot of people rate Water wipes

  9. Changing mat for home

  10. Clothing - sleep suits, vest, hat. maybe mittens

  11. Nappies and bum cream - cloth or disposable

  12. Formula feeding kit (I introduced one formula feed a day from the age of 3 weeks)

  13. Nipple cream - I used Lansinoh

  14. Coat/jacket/ all in one

  15. Baby sleeping bag - Oh my goodness this was like gold for us, can't remember which one we had but it was a bit like this Jojo one with detachable sleeves

Nice to have

  • Baby monitor

  • White noise or Ewan the dream sheep  I think there is a deluxe Ewan too!

  • Sleepyhead or similar

  • Breast pump - Alot of mums I meet love the Medela

  • Carrier and/or Sling - used a babybjorn carrier but if I had my time again I’d choose a fabric one too for when they are teeny tiny - partly because I'm teeny tiny myself and the carrier wasn't right for me, but it was perfect for my husband.

  • Bouncy chair

  • Nursing bras

  • Changing table

  • Nursing pillow

  • Thermometer - we used The Philips Avent one but do your research

  • Baby wash - We used the Weleda Baby range  I particularly like the Shampoos and body wash, and my son still uses it today... and he is 6!

Really really nice to have

Chocolate for Mum and Dad - okay something homemade and delicious!
