My short answer is no, it's not too late unless you would only like a posed Newborn session.

My natural Newborn Lifestyle session is suitable for babies from 1 to 6 weeks old; it takes place at your home. If you want your baby to look more newborn, then around 2 weeks may be better for you. If your baby is 3-6 weeks, it may be less newborn-looking and more alert. However, some babies can still retain their newborn look for some weeks, especially if they are early!

My advice is to study the style you love rather than focus on your baby's age!

Are you into more of a natural look and feel? Then if so, take a look at Newborn Sessions with a Lifestyle focus. An experienced photographer will be more than capable of capturing your family beautifully within those first few weeks.

Or, do you only like the cute, posed, sleepy newborn images? If so, you'd be better off with a Traditional Newborn session. However, this session only works well for babies 7-10 days old. With the Traditional Newborn session, there are various styles of posed newborn photography, so be sure to find a photographer that suits your style.

Natural Newborn Lifestyle Sessions vs Traditional Posed Newborn Sessions

Natural Newborn Lifestyle Sessions

Benefits

You don’t have to leave your home and be somewhere for a specific time

It’s a relaxed, comforting environment. and you’ll feel most comfortable at home

The downside

You’ll need to tidy/clean and organise things around the home to a certain extent.

If you like backgrounds / that “studio” look, it may not be the best option for you. Lifestyle images can look more natural, warmer and less polished. If you like a polished look, it may not be your vibe.

Traditional Posed Newborn Sessions

Benefits

If the photographer comes to your home, you don’t have to leave and be somewhere for a specific time.

It’s a relaxed, comforting environment, so you’ll feel most comfortable at home.

The downside

You have to get the timings right; 7-10 days is ideal.

If you’ve chosen a studio photographer, you’ll have to get there at a specific time.

Your baby will be carefully posed whilst in a deep sleep. In some ways, it can be less natural because the baby has to be posed. However, it can look lovely. It depends on your taste and your photographer’s style too!

Ask yourself what you like in an image.

Do you like images that tell stories? Do you like warmth, feeling an air of comfort? Then the home session is probably for you.

The absolute naked truth

If I get the vibe that a potential client is a warm-hearted soul who loves the idea of a less traditional approach to newborn photography, then I know they will probably love a home newborn lifestyle session.

If I also feel that we’ll connect well as people, I’m almost positive we would have a fantastic session together!
