Natural Baby Photographer London

A little more about Natural Baby Photography sessions with Samantha Black

Natural Baby Photographer London

and

Natural Family Photography London

I’m Samantha

I specialise in creating portraits that will last a lifetime.

What I love about these type of sessions is that they look and feel natural, that’s what makes them a ‘lifestyle’ session

I will capture you and your family, baby in the way you want to remember them. We will laugh, play, be silly, whatever, however but I will want to truly capture the essence of your child/children.

Without being ‘salesy’ or pushy, I will then make it my business to show you how to make the most of your images once you have them because for me, your session is something I truly want you to remember.

I don’t want you to walk away, put your images on the computer and they get forgotten about.  That really is not what I want for any client I work with. So I will find out more about you, what you like and how you see yourself enjoying your images in years to come in order to help you get to the right place in terms of how you will eventually enjoy your images.

So whatever you choose, it needs to be representative of your family, your child, your baby and furthermore, you need to be reminded of this time when you go about you daily lives in the future.  Whether it is seeing portraits around your home, prints on the wall or furniture or even having a beautful book designed which you can keep on the bookshelf or coffee table to leaf through when you feel like doing so.

Whatever you choose, it really must be something that suits you, and your family.  You have to visualise how you see yourself getting the most enjoyment out of your images.

Newborn Baby Lifestyle sessions with Samantha Black

Newborn Baby Lifestyle Photography London

Newborn Baby Lifestyle sessions with Samantha Black

What is a Newborn Lifestyle Photography session?

These sessions are ideal for families who would like to photograph their newborn within the first few weeks (ideally within 8 weeks) in a more relaxed way. With traditional newborn sessions, the focus is mostly on baby with a large degree of posing and some use of props.  With a lifestyle session we will can still do some posing but not as much and really we try to keep the theme as natural as possible. We minimise the use of props and stick to wrap, blankets and simple fabrics and textures.  We can use items in your home to bring a personal feel to the session. For example baby’s blanket, a cot or crib, a changing table can all give your session a slightly different look and feel. There is a whole spectrum within Newborn Lifestyle Photography, and I can work anywhere within that spectrum, we can go super natural or we can incorporate a some posing.

How will I know what style of photography suits my family?

Together we will discuss well before your session and I will work out from you by asking you lots of questions, what I think you like and what would suit you so that on the day we all know what we are doing. It’s really that simple.

What should we wear?

In terms of Mum and Dad, I look for simplicity and comfort in their clothing and appearance, and we shoot is a more relaxed manner whilst still incorporation some degree of posing for Mum and Dad, it still has a really natural look and feel.

White, neutral and earthy tones work really well for clothing and bedding too.

What should baby wear?

Not much at all.  I will work mostly in a nappy, blankets, wraps and bodysuits/sleepsuits.

It’s also good to have maybe one or two sleepsuits and short sleeved bodysuits/vests that you like too.

Also pick out baby blankets you love, I’ll want to see all of these when I arrive.

Anything else?

Yes, just relax as best as you can on the day.

I will do my best to photograph you all in the best way I can.  I cannot tell you how important it is to try  to be ‘in’ these images with your baby, no matter how you feel.  This is your chance to get images of you and your baby and to get them the way you like them.

One day your child will look back and totally cherish these images, more than you know.  They will be the ones that they will always want to see and have. They will be the images that are their forever images

So let’s focus on making you comfortable and getting it right. It’s a very special time for you all, let’s make it an enjoyable one too!

Forever portraits: Mummy and baby

Mum and baby Photography London – Forever portraits I call them.

Forever portraits for me are those really special moments between a mother and her newborn, baby or child.

If I’m honest, my upmost favourite portraits I have of my second child when he was a newborn was one that I took of him and my husband (first image below). And 4 and a half years ago when my son was born I wasn’t a professional newborn photographer. Even so, it was the portrait that I knew I had to have.

And I don’t regret it for one second.

Some of the portraits you see below are quite posed, other are less so.  But whichever portrait style I am photographing, I can guarantee there will be that one moment when I can sense that feeling. Sometimes it’s awe I see, or laughter in their eyes, maybe is just pure love, or sheer happiness, but there is always something… and I will always notice it.  Because I love it.

It’s probably why I love my job so much. I get to witness moments like that. Priceless.

Even in between the awkward moments of baby accidents (which can sometimes happen during a Mummy shot!), it’s there.

So, if you are not sure whether a portrait like this is for you, hopefully after reading this, you will know one way or the other.

The Little Green Sheep – Organic and Ethical

If I’m honest rarely write reviews, however, I came across The Little Green Sheep when I was searching for Organic Muslin Cloths and was instantly attracted to their brand.

142-main

Perhaps it’s because I’m all for using things especially where babies are concerned that are simple and classic, organic and natural, as well as ethical. Or maybe it’s because many of my clients love the same.

Maybe it’s just that they are all about simple and honest ingredients without compromising on quality.

I can understand this wholeheartedly and as I write this blog I can see why I like them so much.

We share the same values – it’s that simple.

Anyway, I digress.

But what I can say is that I love their Muslin Cloths. They are simple, straightforward and you can tell they are all natural.

I figured I just had to give them a virtual high five for their product and ethos. Their number one concern is your baby’s wellbeing so the products they sell are essentially all about creating and maintaining a healthy environment for your baby.

I also thought that since I meet so many parents who ask me for recommendations on so many things, and who buy these sort of products, this is one product that I would recommend they get and one store I suggest they visit:

How to organise your own digital photos

This is a post I have wanted to write for a very LONG time.  The reason it has taken me so long is because it has taken me until now to face the fact that although I am super organised with my clients images, I really needed to spend more time organising my own family images.

Infact, it’s always been a deep, burning desire of mine to print as many images as I can (of course the good ones only), and put them into albums.  Yes I said it. Photo albums. Not storybooks, Not digital albums, Photo albums.

There you go …. and breathe.

Dare I say, I think many of us can only dream about actually organise our thousands of photos taken on our phones, cameras, partner’s phone, and so on.  Let alone all of those old photographs you already have either in a box in the loft (yes, that’s me), or, ones that are already in albums. Oh and let’s not forget about the thousands of images already saved on  your computer.  Or maybe you have some on CD’s, USB’s somewhere.  Please, stay with me now, it will get better. Hyperventilation is really not my thing.

Yes, I do photobooks, and occasionally, I’ll do a special album for a special event, but, the everyday stuff just doesn’t get touched… at all.

Well, that was until recently.

Hence, this blog post.

Here’s the thing, it’s actually really simple, it’s just a matter of being organised and staying on top of it.

Let’s get started then.

1.Create a spreadsheet/ or chart with months down the side and tasks along the top such as:

.                        Clean and consolidate         Backed up       Named and dated    Selected for print      Printed     Put in albums

Jan

Feb

March

April

2. Clean and consolidate every month.

Every month upload all the images on the phones and cameras to one place. This could be iphoto or whichever method you find it easiest to view and sort through your images  This place could be on an external hard drive maybe and in the cloud.

Once you have uploaded everything have a look through at what you really want to keep.  Only keep the ones you need and like.  You really don’t need 20 images of your little one blowing out their candles.

On the subject of consolidating monthly, if you are not already backing up your phone images to the cloud, you should be.  As for anything on a memory card, I recommend getting those images off straight away, don’t delay, it’s just safer.

3. Always have a back up. An external hard drive is perfect for this.  I have 2!

Enough said.

4. Naming and dating.

So you need to name the actual images and date them if you like and then file them into a folder.

For example:

2015>Jan>Evie’s 1st birthday

5. Select the ones for printing

Just pick the ones that matter the most, remember you are telling a story in you album so think carefully, don’t overdo it here.  You will have years and years of photos ahead of you to print so be selective without losing the story.

Put your selection into a standalone folder labelled ‘to print’ – genius I know.

6. Print your images

Now, you can do this monthly, bi monthly, whatever suits you.

7. Put them in your albums

On this note, if you don’t have time to do them straight away, leave them in their envelope but write the month on it then slip them into a box or next to the album/inside the album cover ready to arrange.

The best part for me was buying the album. Oh yes I do love a handmade leather album with high quality paper.  I always get 6×4’s because I can fit 3 on a page nicely in my albums.  I’m getting around 300 photos in my albums.

Whatever the cost in terms of time and money, you really cannot put a price on memories and seeing your photos in print without doubt still the best, most visual and emotive way communicating those memories to the viewer by far. Whether that viewer is a stranger, a friend or you.

Sound like a plan?

It’s working for me, I just have a ton of photos to get through but I love it.

Now, please, go and bring your photos to life and create some proper memories that you and your kids will appreciate in many years to come.

Finding the light in your home – Natural Light Photographer

Let there be light!

I use a variety of lighting: natural light, off camera flash and studio lighting in my work. The majority of my newborn and baby portraits are taken using natural light purely because I love working with natural light when photographing babies and children, so, when I come to your home, I make it my business to find the best light I can.

As photographers, we are in many ways are lovers of light, and sometimes, we don’t love it so much. Typically, many people think that if the sun is out, then its good lighting for taking images.

I’m afraid, that’s a common misconception!

Infact direct sunlight is a harsh light and is really quite unflattering. It is possible to shoot in direct sunlight with the right manipulation, but like with anything, it takes experience, practice and plenty of patience! Essentially, to obtain the best results, it is the ability to read and assess how to use it to your advantage.

I have been commissioned by parents , grandparents and more to  photograph their children, babies and families in many many homes. Every single home is a different lighting situation than the previous and some are more challenging than others, so I have to be able to work the light I have and use it to my advantage.  I can safely say that by being constantly challenged to find that light, the kind of light that I love, it makes me better at what I do.

Look closely, I have chosen these images because the lighting was perfect.

I caught Mum and Dad enjoying a special moment, I have a good amount of natural light, and just enough to highlight the emotion in mums face even though Dad is causing a shadow, it’s still a lovely shot.

 Newborn Photography Highgate-1-7

Newborn Photography Highgate-1-6

Here I have used natural light to highlight the baby’s face just enough and to help create a slightly moody look and feel.

Newborn Photography Highgate

Beautful window light wraps nicely around Mum and Dad

Newborn Photography Highgate

Again, just enough to highlight the features on this little one’s face without going overboard

Newborn Photography Highgate

If you invite me into your home, I’ll find and embrace the light in the best way I know how. Am I a natural light photographer ? I’m simply a photographer.  I can use both natural and artificial light but natural light is very possibly what I love the most.

 It’s just what I do.

Here’s to finding the light in your home 🙂

Choosing wall art for your home

Let’s be honest, I want you to love your wall art, just as much as I love my own.

I use some of the best printers I know. Quality is without a doubt something I choose not to cut corners on. Like I said, I want you to love your wall art.  It really is  that simple.

No doubt, the right wall art can be nothing short of stunning if you get it right so I’m happy guide you, if you want me to, on choosing what works for you and your home.

The best advice I can give is:

1. Keep an open mind, sometimes it’s only when you see your images do you really know which piece of wall art will work for you.

2. If at the outset you are sure you would like art for your home, then do let me know just before I begin photographing your session.

3. Ask for my help if you need it, I can help in terms of print size advice for your space and product options that best suit your home.

4. Get it right and you really will transform your wall, room(s) and ultimately, your home.

Just to give you an idea, here is an example of some of my work mounted in my clients home.
