How do I pose for a mother and baby photoshoot?

As a London Baby Photographer of 12 years, I'm often asked questions about how to pose especially when it comes to Newborn Photography.

I'd say we get the best when you just come as yourself. Yes, it may sound a little corny, but I love it when I turn up, and Mum is herself; she’s put in a bit of effort but looks like her best self.

It's as if it’s just any other day, and I’m popping in to visit. This day is slightly different; maybe you aren’t wearing your joggers or dress gown.

We always get the best work when Mum (and I) and I are up for trying out a few things.

How do I pose for a mother and baby photoshoot?

I'm afraid there is no quick-fire answer, but stay with me because I want to share how I work and how that helps Mums.

How I tend to work

I often direct Mums and Dads to get the best out of them. If Mum is open and willing, I always use my intuition to understand what they are like, and my direction will be as much or as little as needed. I direct all posing, but I encourage Mum to lean into it constantly.

When I work with families or individuals, I treat everyone as a wholly new and unique experience—everything explicitly tailored to them. I’ve learned how to master this skill over many years now, and it’s a pretty freeing experience because it challenges me creatively in ways other things cannot.

I also have many years of experience posing newborns, and whilst I don’t take this kind of work anymore, it’s helped me. I’m confident working with newborns, as I’ve photographed hundreds of babies. Please take a look at my older newborn work here.

How does this help mums (and dads, too!)?

I often work with individuals who don’t want to be photographed too much, and these can be some of my best works.

My clients often like help with all aspects, so once I show them what they can do and how that can look, they start to feel comfortable with it all. Sometimes, my client is also very creative and has many ideas. This is great! Together, we will figure out what we think will work.

Samples of what I’ve done

Here is a small sample of what I’ve done in the past. It is just a tiny selection, and I could never possibly share everything because a lot of it exists in my head and now in my client’s homes in the form of prints, albums and digital files on hard drives. I constantly change it depending on the vibe or mood I get from the situation.

Or maybe even a bit of this :) ...

session styling - I will guide you as much or as little as you need

Depending on the type of motherhood session, we go for it either requires minimal preparations or a good few weeks of preparation!

So talk to me honestly about what you want, really be honest because the more open you are with me, the better.  I want these sessions to feel warm, close, and comfortable. Sometimes, they can be therapeutic too.

So, the key is to keep it simple and have an open mind. Flexibility goes a long way.

makeup and hair

Doing your make-up and hair is fine. If we are going for a more is less look, then do it yourself, but it you want to look very polished, feel free to get it done for you. Just be the best home version of you.

I'll help you through the process once I know what look and feel we are going for.
